Artist, critic and educator Roger Boyce is an expat American living and working in Christchurch, New Zealand. He has a long-established painting practice and occasionally writes criticism for Art in America, Sculpture, Art New Zealand and ARTNET, among others.
“Where I come from the only people who read visual art criticism and review are the artist, his dealer and the artist’s mother. My first loyalty (aside from my young son) is to artists wherever they might be geographically located.”
Wish in one hand. Crap in the other. Which hand is now fuller? The art world, with its treasure-house of pretense, is ripe for satire. Art about art is the leitmotif of 20th and 21st century art.
Boyce uses additive and subtractive methods to create marks and texture. For example, he may paint on a surface then scrape it back. He often paints onto found objects and incorporates text into his work.
